500g Residual Herbicide for Weed Control
This is a professional residual herbicide supplied as a 500g water dispersible granule. Its two active substances, diflufenican and iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium, control very young weeds present at the time of spraying and then provide residual control for up to four months, keeping treated areas weed free for longer. Please note: packaging may vary.
Key Features
- Pre- and early post-emergence control (up to the two leaf stage) of annual and perennial broad-leaved plants and grasses
- Residual effect lasting up to four months
- Controls a broad spectrum of annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds
- Single application per year at 0.5kg/ha
- 500g pack treats 1ha and includes a measuring cup
- Can be tank mixed with glyphosate or a fatty acid where larger weeds are already present
- Brings new chemistry to help manage herbicide resistance; in a trial on a heavily weeded gravel site at an international airport it mixed cleanly with no foaming in the tank
- Suited to keeping larger areas weed free
How to Use
When to use
Can be applied at any time of year, but works best when applied pre- or early post-emergence of weeds (up to the 2 leaf stage). Main application window: February to May, with the remaining months as a secondary window.
Mixing
- Fill the spray tank with half the required water.
- Add the required quantity of herbicide.
- Agitate the tank until the granules are fully dispersed.
- Top up with water to the required level.
| Maximum Treatments | Pack Coverage | Application Rate | Water Volume | Application Method | Spray Quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 per annum | 1ha | 0.5kg/ha | 300 - 500 L/ha | Conventional knapsack sprayer | Coarse |
Applications
Approved for professional use on:
- Amenity vegetation (around) – areas of bare soil around ornamental plants, or intended for ornamental planting
- Natural surfaces not intended to bear vegetation – areas of soil or natural rock outcrops not intended to bear vegetation
- Permeable surfaces overlying soil – any man-made permeable surface (excluding railway ballast) that overlies soil and is not intended to bear vegetation
- Hard surfaces (railway ballast only) – any man-made impermeable surface not intended to bear vegetation
Target Species
A selection of the species controlled is shown below (refer to the product label for the full list). It will not control established deep-rooted perennials such as dandelion, thistle or nettles.

About the Active Substances
Diflufenican
- Mode of action: a pigment synthesis inhibitor. It disrupts pigment production so chlorophyll is left unprotected from sunlight, causing the cell contents to break down rapidly.
- Mobility: a residual herbicide with xylem-mobile activity; it is taken up through the leaves and roots of susceptible plants and moves upwards in the xylem (water conducting tissues).
- Timing: apply pre- or early post-emergence; post-emergence treatments are most effective on small target plants.
Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium
- Mode of action: an ALS (Acetolactate Synthase) inhibitor. ALS is a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids; blocking it makes the plant turn chlorotic, then plant tissues become necrotic and the whole plant dies.
- Mobility: a residual herbicide with xylem- and phloem-mobile activity; absorbed through leaves and roots, it moves to areas of new growth in the xylem (water conducting tissues) or phloem (sugar conducting tissues).
- Timing: best applied while weeds are actively growing, and most effective on young plants in their vegetative phase.
Notes
- Can be applied in cold weather, but do not apply to frozen ground.
- Do not treat plants growing under stress, as this can reduce control.
- Where treated sites are later to be cleared or cultivated, allow six months between treatment and sowing or planting the following crop, AND cultivate the soil deeply.
- Avoid contact with non-target plants.
- Diflufenican builds up in the soil when this or other diflufenican products are used in successive years.
- For best results ensure good coverage, and do not cultivate or rake the area after application.
- DO NOT apply over drains or in drainage channels, gullies or similar structures that carry moving water.
- For professional use only.
