500ml Insecticide Liquid Diflubenzuron for Caterpillar Control

Overview

This 500ml liquid insecticide controls caterpillars on ornamental plants, nursery stock, amenity trees, shrubs, hedges and in forestry. Its active ingredient, diflubenzuron, stops the insect producing chitin, the material it needs to build its exoskeleton.

Key Features

  • Active ingredient: 480 g/l diflubenzuron (40% w/w)
  • Works by inhibiting chitin production, which the insect uses to form its exoskeleton
  • Controls a range of moth caterpillars including Browntail, Oak Processionary, Small Ermine, Carnation Tortrix, Winter, Lackey, Oak Leaf Roller, Pine Looper and Pine Beauty moths
  • Suitable for ground application and, in forestry, aerial application

Areas of Use, Pests Controlled and Rates

Areas of use Controls Rates
Ornamental plant production, nursery stock, and amenity trees, shrubs and hedges Browntail Moth, Small Ermine Moths, Carnation Tortrix, Winter Moth and Lackey Moth Browntail Moth: 6 ml/100 litres water
Oak Processionary Moth, Carnation Tortrix, Lackey, Small Ermine and Winter Moths: 13 ml/100 litres water
Apply at high volume, using enough water to give thorough coverage of the foliage.
Forestry Oak Leaf Roller Moths, Pine Looper, Pine Beauty Moth, Winter Moths Ground application: 150 ml/ha, making sure the foliage is well covered
Aerial application: 150 ml/ha tank mixed with a suitable adjuvant
Apply with suitable ULV spraying equipment at 1-10 litres/ha. Aerial applications must only be made with controlled droplet application/rotary atomiser equipment.

How to Use

Thorough spray coverage is vital for the best control, particularly on the undersides of leaves and on large trees with a full leaf canopy. Use a suitable sprayer, correctly set up to give good coverage, and apply the recommended water volume. Do not leave spray liquid standing in the sprayer for long periods, such as over meal breaks or overnight.

Timing

Pest When to apply
Browntail Moth Best control comes from a summer spray as the eggs start to hatch (usually late July to early August). If needed, spraying can carry on into early autumn but must be finished well before the caterpillars stop feeding outside their winter nests. The insecticide can also be applied in spring once the caterpillars have finally left their nests and there is a reasonable leaf canopy.
Carnation Tortrix Apply from egg hatch to early instar stage, usually late April to mid May, repeating 3-4 weeks later if needed. Use pheromone trap catches as a guide to timing.
Lackey and Winter Moths Apply from egg hatch to early instar stage, usually late April to mid May, repeating 3-4 weeks later if needed.
Small Ermine Moths Apply as the larvae start to come out of their overwintering shelters in April, but not until there is a reasonable leaf canopy. Repeat 3-4 weeks later if needed.
Oak Leaf Roller and Winter Moth Apply in early spring while the caterpillars are still at an early instar stage, but not before the leaves start to expand after bud burst.
Pine Beauty Moth Apply from egg hatch to early instar, usually May to early June.
Pine Looper Apply from egg hatch to early instar stage, usually in August.

Notes

  • Crop tolerance: this insecticide has been applied as a foliar spray to a wide range of cultivars with no sign of crop damage. Because so many ornamental cultivars are grown, check susceptibility by treating a small number of plants first.
  • Caution: very toxic to aquatic life.
