Chafer Beetle Trap 2000m² Coverage with Pheromone Lure
This garden chafer beetle trap uses a pheromone attractant lure to draw in adult male garden chafer beetles, giving greenkeepers and turf managers early warning that the beetles are active and that egg laying is on its way. One trap covers up to 2000 sq metres (half an acre), and the lure is supplied with it.
Key Features
- Pheromone attractant lure included, lasting up to six weeks to cover the main flying season
- Beetles fly into the plastic vanes on top, drop down the funnel and cannot get out
- Targets the garden chafer, Phyllopertha horticola, the UK chafer species (of six) responsible for most turf damage
- The lure attracts the garden chafer only, not other chafer species
- Covers up to 2000 sq metres or half an acre per trap
- Reusable each year by fitting a new lure capsule
- Helps reduce egg laying by adult beetles and signals when chafers are present
- Supports Integrated Pest Management by monitoring the active life stage, so entomopathogenic nematode treatments can be timed more accurately
Why Monitor Garden Chafer?
The adult garden chafer is about 10 mm long, with chestnut-brown wing cases and a glossy dark green head, thorax and legs. After the female lays her eggs, they hatch into chafer grubs that cause two kinds of damage:
- Primary damage: the grubs eat grass roots, cutting the plant's access to water and nutrients and leaving it more vulnerable to biotic (organism) and abiotic (environmental) stress. Shallower rooting also makes the turf surface less stable.
- Secondary damage: birds and mammals feed on the larvae and can badly damage turf as they peck and dig for the grubs.
How to Use
Placement and Timing
- Set the trap in lawn areas, hung 50-100 cm above the ground
- Put traps out by May and leave them in place through June (usage window: May - June)
Assembling the Trap
- Slot the vanes together (A into B) and push the four plastic pins into the matching holes on the funnel.
- Press the lid firmly onto the vanes.
- Attach the funnel to the bucket with a twist, lining up the slots.
- Thread the string through the holes in the lid.
- Hang the trap by the string at 50-100 cm from the ground.
Fitting the Attractant Lure
- Take the lure (a plastic vial of liquid attractant) out of its aluminium sachet.
- Snip off the top of the vial with scissors and, keeping it upright, place it in the cage and close it with the cap.
- Push the cage down into the hole in the top of the lid, making sure it is held securely.
Storing the Lure
Keep the lure in its aluminium sachet in a freezer or fridge until needed. Stored in a freezer at -18 °C, lures have a shelf life of 2 years from the production date.
