From bare soil to a meadow
Where to sow
- Well suited to a range of soil types and environments, including public green spaces and gardens.
- Avoid land that is completely shaded or enclosed by trees: most species in the mix need full, or at least half, sunlight to flourish.
- The species are drought resistant, but some moisture must be present for them to thrive.
- Avoid spaces prone to weed ingress, such as landfill, farmland or old vacant sites.
When to sow
Sow when the soil is warm and moist enough to promote germination, traditionally in spring. Sowing is possible from the end of March or beginning of April, once late spring frosts are over, and can continue until approximately the end of June depending on conditions.

Preparing the ground
- Ground preparation is crucial for the best results. Never sow seed onto an area that is already covered, such as into an existing lawn.
- For optimal germination the soil may need to be worked, prepared and/or treated before sowing.
- The seed should be in good contact with the soil and lightly covered.
How to sow
- Keep the seed in its original packaging at normal temperatures (5°C to 20°C) until the day you sow.
- Shake the can or bag to mix the seeds well before sowing.
- Keep mixing the seed throughout sowing, by hand or by machine, to achieve an even distribution of plants.
- The ideal sowing method depends on the area being planted.
- Ideal sowing rate: 3-5 g/m².
- Hand sowing usually gives the best results on areas under a few hundred m²; mechanised sowing suits larger areas.
- Where possible use a micro-granule or fertiliser applicator. Lightly cover the seeds and use a suitable roller to achieve good seed-to-soil contact.
- A seed drill is also advised.

Maintenance
Very little maintenance is needed. The mix does not need watering, feeding or treating with pesticides. Once established, the small ecosystem it creates sustains the species and lets them thrive freely.
As this mix contains biennials and perennials, if it is to be kept for more than one year, cut back and collect all the top growth before the next spring. Hand weed or spot treat any undesirable species.
